About the amateur farmer girl…
Hi, I’m Dara. If you stick around long enough, (and I really hope you do!), you may come to know more than you might like to about me. I am an oddball, ever in search of the place I fit in. I’ve always wanted to have a vast, dazzling wealth of wisdom to send forth into the universe. But, alas, I have a wandering soul with many interests, and I only know a little bit about lots of things.
Life is a journey, (to start right off with a favorite cliché), my journey is full of colorful, sometimes ludicrously entertaining stories, experiences, and characters who rather obnoxiously, insist on being heard. Maybe, in the process of sharing, some of the things I’m learning along the way I might help make your journey a little easier. At the very least, I hope to make you giggle.
Education
I just like to write. It makes me feel good. It is my hope is that all of you writing and grammar gurus can forgive my unrefined musings and my rudimentary blogging skills as I learn to navigate this alternate universe. Moreover, disregard the excessive use of passive voice, imminent lack of transition words, and above all, the very likely, dangling participle. Most importantly, I hope you find some amusement, entertainment, or interest amongst these posts!
My educational background is in biology/zoology and in nursing. However, rather than using those degrees gainfully, I currently find it more interesting to let the road lead where it may (I think that is the last cliché… for now.)
Background
A bit of a nerd, I love science, science fiction, nature, craft beer, folk, classical, and rock music, spirited conversation, learning new things, going to new places, and spending time with family and good friends.
Despite getting married too young, my husband, Byron, and I have been married for 23 amazing years and have known each other nearly all of our lives. We grew up together in the same picturesque little Colorado mountain town and moved to Tennessee while Byron was in the Army. Later, we moved back to Colorado for a stint, and finally, ended up in Virginia. We have a 20-year-old son named Jackson who is an exceptionally promising individual. He is an engineering student and cadet at Virginia Tech., upon whom we dote.
Byron and I are in the honeymoon phase of our 40’s (that’s so not a thing) and we recently made the leap to pursue our lifelong dream of owning property and having a farm. In this blog, aptly named the midlife crisis farm chronicles, I share some of the stories of our sometimes absurd and ridiculous adventures.
We share the RV (spoiler alert: we sold our house and bought an RV!), with our 2-year-old goof-ball hound mix named Roscoe and a scrawny old cat we call Boots, who has eagerly and exuberantly accompanied us on several of our moves about the country.
Join me
Pull up a lawn chair, grab a glass of iced tea or hard cider- made right here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and join us here on the farm for some good ole fashioned levity. I can’t wait to get to know you. Really. I spend way too much time alone these days! http://midlifecrisischronicles.com
Some stuff I like
- Movie: Jurassic Park (The original)
- Mindless guilty pleasure: Spider Solitaire (actually, online shopping- don’t tell Byron)
- Dessert: anything from Shyndigz in Richmond, VA. I dream about the salted chocolate caramel cake just about every night.
- Cocktail: boring old rum and Coke-but it has to be Kraken or Sailor Jerry
- TV theme song: theme from Vikings on the History Channel
- The Virginia sunrise
Some things I could live without
- Mosquitos
- Reflux
- The lip on the shower I stub my toe on every morning
- The loudly snoring Orc who sleeps in my bed
- Budgeting
- Raisins
This is going to be awesome!
Now it’s a party!!
